Aljarafe: storage for the future

Aljarafe represents our commitment to new storage capacities. The project aims to convert the San Juan, Palancares and La Cerca fields to store renewable hydrogen on a large scale. Located some 20 kilometres from Seville, they are very close to the future hydrogen backbone network and near the Andalusian Hydrogen Valley.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is energy storage infrastructure?

Energy storage infrastructure makes it possible to store energy and recover it whenever the system requires it. Trinity Energy Storage primarily works with underground storage solutions.

Why is energy storage strategic?

Energy storage is strategic because it provides security, stability and flexibility to the system. It enables the management of differences between generation and demand, and facilitates the progressive integration of new energy sources.

What storage infrastructure does Trinity Energy Storage have?

Trinity Energy Storage holds the Marismas natural gas Underground Storage Concession as its operational core and is developing Aljarafe as a future underground storage infrastructure for renewable hydrogen.

What is the Marismas storage facility?

Marismas is an underground natural gas storage facility located in Huelva. It consists of the former Marismas-3 and Rincón fields and is integrated into the Spanish gas system.

What is the storage capacity of Marismas?

Marismas has a recognised maximum operational capacity of 1,615 GWh.

What is the Aljarafe Project?

The Aljarafe Project is Trinity Energy Storage's initiative to develop large-scale underground renewable hydrogen storage by repurposing three former depleted gas fields.

What is the relationship between Marismas and Aljarafe?

Marismas represents the consolidated operational expertise of Trinity Energy Storage, whilst Aljarafe translates that knowledge into the development of new underground storage capacities for renewable hydrogen.

How can a depleted field be used to store energy?

Once the gas naturally held within the reservoir is depleted, it is converted to serve as a storage facility.

What role does renewable hydrogen play in future storage infrastructure?

Renewable hydrogen is one of Trinity Energy Storage's main lines of future development. Aljarafe is specifically designed as a large-scale underground renewable hydrogen storage facility.

How does R+D+I contribute to the development of new storage infrastructure?

R+D+I enables the study of hydrogen behaviour, storage integrity, injection and withdrawal processes, and monitoring technologies prior to the development of new infrastructure.
